Your Hooked recipe for the absolute best curry herring

We most often associate it with Christmas or Easter lunch, and on a normal weekday it can also be found on the lunch table to spice up an otherwise boring rye bread sandwich - yes, we're talking about curry pudding.

For many, the curry herring is the favorite herring, and while we love all kinds of fish, traditional or street food style, we understand why this is a favorite for many. Whether you prefer to top it with eggs, onions, fresh apples or capers, we've put together a recipe for the best curry herring in, of course, true Hooked style.

Recipe for homemade curry herring

For 4 people.

Approx. 15 min. in total

Ingredients for curry herring:

  • 400 g marinated herring fillets (drained weight)
  • 5 tablespoons sour cream 18%.
  • 3 tbsp. mayonnaise
  • 2 small shallots
  • 2 tsp. capers
  • 0.5 pcs. red apple
  • 1 tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 50 g. pickled cucumbers
  • 3 tsp. curry
  • 0.5 tsp. turmeric
  • 1 tbsp. sugar
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper
  • Dill or chives to top it off

Here's how to do it

  1. Pat the herring fillets dry with a kitchen towel and then cut them into smaller bite-sized pieces.
  2. Pour the sour cream, lemon juice and mayonnaise into a bowl. Stir the wet ingredients together with curry powder, turmeric and sugar. Season to taste.
  3. Finely chop the shallots, apple, capers and cucumbers. Add to the bowl and season with freshly ground pepper and salt.
  4. Add the herring pieces to the bowl and toss them in the dressing.
  5. Serve your curry herring in a bowl with herbs on top.

Go the extra mile with your curry herring

Although the curry herring itself is the crowning glory, the foundation is just as important. Rye bread is probably the most common way to serve curry herring. However, as this is also important to keep in mind, you can impress your guests even more by baking a homemade rye bread to accompany your curry herring.

It's all about the whole experience, no matter what the dish is. A homemade rye bread will help emphasize the flavour of the curry and offer your guests an even better experience.

Fish for the whole family

The curry herring is so mild and soft in flavor that it can be enjoyed by both the young and old in the family when you gather around the table for Christmas or Easter lunch. Add apple cubes or a soft-boiled egg to top off the curry for the little ones. This is often a hit with the youngest.
